How to Treat Hormonal Imbalance Naturally with Ayurveda

Balancing the hormonal system is a delicate act. Hormones are very subtle and also very potent—and so are the effects of an imbalanced hormonal system. These symptoms can be very tiring on your mind and body. Fatigue, mood swings, emotional volatility, and a painful or uncomfortable menstrual cycle can often be traced back to the condition of the hormonal system.

Ayurveda views the hormonal system as an aspect of Pitta Dosha—the inner intelligence which governs all transformation in the mind-body system. Hormones enact changes and regulate countless activities in the body, and as such, their balance, rhythm, and overall vitality determine much in our experience of health.

How to Balance Hormones Naturally with Ayurveda

Ayurveda works to create hormonal balance in three fundamental ways:

  1. Reducing intake and exposure to factors that are aggravating the hormonal system

  2. Providing herbs and diet that help to regulate balanced hormone production and potency

  3. Re-establishing a natural daily routine that is in alignment with Nature’s cycles

People often find an experience of rapid balancing when working with me to establish hormonal balance. This is one area of Ayurveda that I’ve specialized in, as it closely relates to a person’s mental and emotional health. When working with clients, one assessment I’ve often made is: “You’re not actually depressed, your system is just fatigued and your hormonal system needs to be re-tuned.” Another common scenario is someone experiencing chronic anxiety when their system really needs a holistic reset to allow the brain chemistry to return to a normal state.

How Your Mind and Emotions Affect Your Hormones

The relationship between the hormonal system and a person’s mental and emotional health is too complex to be covered in this article. But when a client is dealing with mental health problems, one of the first steps I take is to look at their hormonal system.

An individual’s neurochemistry is deeply connected with the activity of the endocrine glands, and vice versa. Even if the brain chemistry is in a balanced state, this can easily be thrown off when the endocrine glands of the brain (hypothalamus, pituitary, and pineal glands) are not balanced. There are a few natural ways to balance hormones, but a dual approach is most effective: taking care of both the hormonal system and biochemistry of the brain to create endocrine balance.

How to Cure Hormonal Imbalance

There are many factors that can lead to an imbalance in the hormonal system:

  • Lack of sleep and physical activity

  • Being out of alignment with the natural cycles of day and night

  • Lack of a meditation or spiritual practice to settle the nervous system

  • A diet high in sugar, salt, processed foods, and oils

So, what helps hormonal imbalance? In many cases, I’ve found that just avoiding factors that aggravate the hormonal system will take care of most hormonal imbalances and uncomfortable symptoms. But Ayurveda offers far more than rebalancing the system and alleviating symptoms. Ideally, our hormonal system should create a state of physiological and psychological bliss. This in turn causes all the systems affected by the hormonal system to operate more smoothly.

Ayurveda: Hormonal Imbalance Treatment

There are many natural remedies for hormonal imbalance, and the specific herbs and dietary recommendations that help to balance one’s hormonal system are specific to each person and their individual constitution. This is why I always recommend having a personal session to be sure you’re taking the right natural medicines for you.

Creating balance in the hormonal system goes a long way to ensuring mental health, happiness, balanced digestion, natural energy, and more. The path towards hormonal balance is unique for each person, and having a personal session can help you accelerate your healing in this area.
